How to Use the Word Descrambler
- Enter 2 to 15 letters. Add ? for up to two unknown letters.
- Choose Use any available letters for shorter words, or Use every entered letter for exact-length anagrams.
- Set a minimum length, sorting method, and optional length grouping.
- Select Find words, then copy every match or reveal additional result pages.
How Letter Matching and Wildcards Work
The matcher counts every entered letter. A candidate can use a letter no more times than it appears in the rack unless a ? wildcard supplies the missing copy. Use every entered letter requires the candidate length to equal the full rack length, including wildcards. Use any available letters accepts shorter words down to the selected minimum length.
The dictionary is a reproducible American-English extract from ESDB/SCOWL release 2026.02.25. The Common label means a word is included in ESDB size 35; Extended means it first appears by size 60. Common-first ranking is a practical tier, not a claim about exact modern usage frequency.

With Use every entered letter selected, LISTEN returns six-letter anagrams such as ENLIST, INLETS, LISTEN, SILENT, and TINSEL in the pinned dictionary.
Use a wildcard in RATES?
The ? can stand for one missing letter. Exact-use mode checks six-letter words built from R, A, T, E, S, and one replacement letter; any-letter mode also includes shorter matches.
Repeated letters must be available
A rack with one E cannot make a word that needs two Es unless a wildcard supplies the second one. Each wildcard fills only one missing letter position.
Dictionary and Score Limitations
No word list contains every name, technical term, regional spelling, or word accepted by every puzzle. Results use American spelling, remove accents, exclude special ESDB categories, and keep A-Z words from 2 to 15 letters. The displayed tile score uses familiar English letter values only as a sorting aid; board bonuses, game-specific dictionaries, and proprietary rules are not included.
Local Processing and Dataset Updates
The two word-list files load from this site when the tool first searches, then matching and sorting run in the browser. The pinned release, generation settings, word counts, copyright notice, and SHA-256 hashes are recorded in the repository dataset notice. A future update must regenerate both tiers and rerun deterministic match tests before publication.
