How the Word Counter Works
The tool treats each continuous group of non-whitespace characters as one word. That simple rule keeps contractions, hyphenated terms, URLs, and numbers together when they contain no spaces. Characters include spaces and punctuation, while the no-spaces count removes all whitespace.
A sentence is counted when a non-empty passage ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation point; a final passage without punctuation also counts. Paragraphs are non-empty blocks separated by one or more line breaks.

A 500-word article
At 200 words per minute, 500 words take about 2.5 minutes to read. At 130 words per minute, the same text takes about 3.8 minutes to speak aloud.
A short social post
Paste the draft to check both words and characters before publishing. Character counts include spaces because many platforms count them toward a limit.
When Word Counts Differ Between Tools
Word processors and publishing platforms may use different rules for hyphens, em dashes, emoji, CJK text, or hidden formatting. Use the count from the destination platform when an exact contractual or submission limit matters.
