How Tip Calculations Work
Tip amount equals bill amount × tip rate ÷ 100. Add the tip to the bill for the total, then divide the total by the number of people for an equal split. The calculator displays amounts to the nearest cent.
Tip Calculator Examples
20% tip on a $100 bill
The tip is $20 and the total bill is $120. Split equally among four people, each person pays $30.
18% tip on a $64.50 bill
The exact tip is $11.61, making the total $76.11. An equal split among three people is $25.37 each.
Before or After Tax?
Tipping customs vary. Some people calculate a tip from the pre-tax subtotal, while others use the final after-tax amount. Enter the amount you intend to use as the tipping base and follow local customs or the service arrangement.
Splitting and Rounding the Bill
An equal split may leave a one-cent difference when the total does not divide evenly. The calculator shows a rounded per-person amount; a group can assign the rounding difference to one person or adjust the final payment amounts.
